The
photos above represent some of the Firefighting aircraft at Williams
Gateway Airport (IWA) during the Arizona forest fires of 2002.
Williams Gateway Airport is located in Mesa, Arizona. A short drive,
Southeast from Phoenix. It is on the site of the former Williams Air
Force Base. It officially opened for business in 1994. Numerous
improvements are currently under way. The airport is used mainly for flight testing and some
maintenance by several businesses, as well as flight training by
several airlines. Increasingly, cargo aircraft can be seen at Gateway,
with the auto industry shipping automotive parts from here in
particular. On occasion, some other interesting aircraft may be seen
here as well. Boeing and Bombardier have recently (and in the past)
sent test aircraft to this airport. Also, Native American Air Ambulance
maintains a base here on the airport.
Although you probably won't see a lot at "Willie", if you're in the
Phoenix area a side trip to this airport may produce some interesting
sightings.
